The new Kenyan constitution privileges ...Hi Kweli:

The new Kenyan constitution privileges minority rights but is skittish about the term indigenous.

It is a step in the right direction but implementation and political will are important issues.

If we just go on the fact that the government has not even begun to implement the Endorois decision then it is a troubling sign for indigenous rights/development.

Across the continent indigenous and minority people are made marginal and viewed with hostility by the neo-liberal clones we inherited.

Ethiopia and the Gibe Dam projects come to mind. And of course Botswana and the Basarwa.

The Endorois decision is a landmark case but then again you are talking about the African Union - too often a spineless organization.

CEMIRIDE does not have a dedicated website. I will talk to Korir about it but also know that he is less involved in the day to day running now.

Peace,
RidwanRidwanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16758153484699728802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36009958.post-39409726224046617482011-07-19T21:36:44.830+02:002011-07-19T21:36:44.830+02:00Ridwan,
When I came across this judicial decision ...Ridwan,
When I came across this judicial decision in favor of the Endorois, I was elated. Indigenous rights law is way behind in Kenya.

The black elites have sold us the idea that the playing field is level, that everyone is seated at the table. And in Kenya, the Big 5 (two of which I come from) are blind to the plight of the smaller fish in the sea.

A while back I was looking up CEMIRIDE online, but I couldn't find their website. Korir and Co. are doing great work. Maybe a website/blog would give them more visibility?

Amandla!Kwelihttp://kweligee.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
