The holy month of Ramadan has started. This is a time for looking deeper than the surface of our routines.
"The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Qur'ân was sent down, a guidance for mankind, clear proofs for the guidance, the Criterion; so whoever amongst you witnesses this month, let them fast it." (Qur'an: Surah
Al-Baqarah 2:185)
Not eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset is meant to bring us closer to our humanity. The purpose being unity and a consolidation toward justice.
Honour this the fifth pillar of Islam. And bear witness that there is only one God.
The God of all that exists.
I wish all Muslims well over the fast. My prayers go to those innocents in Iraq who bear the weight of the onslaught on our religion, our way of life, and our humanity. We have been here before. And still we stand.
This from the Qur'an speaks loudly to me today:
Sūra 103: ‘Aṣr, or Time through the Ages
Section 1 (1-3).
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful:
1. By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),
2. Verily Man (humanity) is in loss
3. Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.
Keep steadfast in struggle and prayer. Both are meant to be the same thing.
