Only Saudi Women May Sell Lingerie

News24.
January 2, 2012.

Riyadh - Saudi Arabia says starting on Thursday, only females can work in women's lingerie stores.

The 2006 law banning men from working in female apparel and cosmetic stores has never been put into effect, partly due to hard-liners in the religious establishment who oppose the whole idea of women working where men and women congregate together, like malls.

The Labour Ministry says that over 28 000 women have already applied for the sales jobs.

Saudi's Arabia's most senior cleric, Sheik Abdul-Aziz Al Sheikh, spoke out against the decision in a recent sermon, saying it contradicts Islamic law.

He argued that wrongdoing may occur when a woman stands face to face with a man and sells without embarrassment.

The country follows an ultraconservative interpretation of Islam called Wahhabism.  (SAPA)

Comment: Oh the embarrassment of losing your job as a lingerie salesperson/man to a woman.  Must be so emasculating, no?

I would be crushed.  For real.  I mean you establish a clientele base, not that you can tell one female customer from another mind you, but nonetheless you have a reputation of selling naked niceties to oppressed women so they can be 'free' - it is a revolutionary job.

It is all so confusing.

What exactly does the Qur'an say about women buying lingerie from women at their local mall?  Or women selling without embarrassment?  What is that anyway?

Just trying to figure out how all this is against Islamic law

And what exactly goes for lingerie in the kingdumb?  Fingerless gloves?  :0)

I'm gonna need a lotta aspirin wrapping my head around the f*cked up gender politics that Saudis sell as Islamic.  Again.

Onward!

Ps.  Don't stories like this give Islamophobes a big hard-on, or at least a small pitched tent if you know what I mean? ;0)

Snuggies totally pass for lingerie in Saudi. They show so much arm :(

There is, I believe, a significant "arm fetish" community in Riyadh.

This Sheikh is serious giving me a headache, boet. And I've been trying to reduce consuming drinks that are haram. Sigh.

I guess Sheik Abdul-Aziz would be really pissed if a woman drove herself to the mall and bought lingerie and cosmetics all by her lonesome!

How indecent and without embarrassment is that - enough to violate virginity just about anywhere?

What is the world coming to if you can't even expect women to know their place in the kingdumb?

What's next? Women will want to be Imams, or worse, kings?

I used to know a Saudi dude in Indiana during my graduate school days who used to get off watching women's hands on the Home Shopping Network.

He would be in 'porno' heaven when HSN was selling rings or nail stuff!

Not knocking the dude - to each his own but there is something warped in any society where women are reduced to objects - be it sexual objects or religious ones.

Makes no difference hey?

But what do I know? I still live with my momma and fun for me now revolves around feeding feral cats in-between cussing at my laptop for not writing my stuff by itself ;0)

Peace boeta Kweli!

Onward! to the liberation of women from men in drag. :0)
