NEW YORK (AP) — A baby-faced college student will serve 9 1/2 years behind bars after pleading guilty Tuesday to charges he attacked a New York City taxi driver from Bangladesh during an anti-Muslim tirade inside a cab.Read the rest here.
“I used a knife. I cut him in the throat,” Michael Enright said in a low, halting voice when asked by a Manhattan judge to describe his crimes.
Prosecutor James Zaleta argued that Enright deserved an 18-year prison term for a “vicious, cold-blooded attack” that came in 2010 as the Sept. 11 anniversary neared and an emotional debate over a planned Islamic center and mosque near ground zero was raging.
“After insulting the tenets of Islam and mocking the restrictions of Ramadan, the defendant, unprovoked, reached through the cab partition and sliced the victim across his neck,” Zaleta said.
Judge Richard Carruthers agreed that the charges — attempted murder and assault as hate crimes — were serious. But he said he was imposing a lesser sentence because Enright had no previous criminal record and because the victim wasn’t badly hurt.
“This sentence is appropriate and just,” the judge said.
Enright, who is a 24 but could pass for a teenager, wore an oversized knit pullover sweater to court. He remained expressionless throughout proceedings that ended with his bail being revoked and court officers taking him away in handcuffs.
Authorities allege Enright asked cab driver Ahmed Sharif whether he was Muslim, uttered an Arabic greeting and told him to “consider this a checkpoint” before slashing him.
Enright initially told police that Sharif tried to rob him and he’d defended himself, prosecutors said. The film student later declared to police that he was “a patriot,” according to prosecutors.
A lawyer for Enright had said was beset by alcoholism and by post-traumatic stress disorder from a 2009 trip to Afghanistan, where he was shooting a documentary. He was held for a time in a psychiatric ward, though prosecutors had questioned whether he has serious psychiatric problems.

Comment: I first covered this story in a post here at blog central in August 2010 under a headline that reads: Stabbed for Being Muslim in NY. You can see a picture of Enright - who is described as a "baby-faced" student in the report above - in my 2010 post.
I thought about that description. What does it mean or try to convey? Is it just an observation by the reporter or some kind of incredulous wonder that a 24-year old "baby-faced" white student could be so racist and devoid of humane reason that he would try to kill a cab driver for being Muslim.
It is becoming usual this racist Islamophobe business; almost a post 9/11 right to be racist about and toward Muslims.
Remember the bigot who broke the jaw of an Iraq war veteran cab driver for being "a f*cking Muslim"? It happened just a month or so ago. See my post here.
Yesterday I read about a young white woman who hurled racist anti-Arab insults at workers at a Dunkin' Donuts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The woman - incredulously - filmed the incident on her cell and posted it to YouTube in a tirade that was meant as some sort of revenge for poor service the previous evening. Her tirade included calling a male worker a "sand-nigger" and the female worker who served her previously "a complete cunt sand nigger whore."
She then added:
"So I hope you’re happy with your little fucking sand nigger self. Cause I’m about to nuke your whole fucking planet from Mars. You think ya’ll are tough big fat Arabs bombin’ the Trade Center? I’ll show you tough.”The Smoking Gun identified this racist nutter as Taylor Chapman (27). They also posted her 8-minute racist rant and they found a picture of her doing a promotional advertisement for a Chinese restaurant. She claims to have a business degree and to be in law school.

The teenager is Abid Adar and he is only 18. So that would make him 6 when those planes were flown into buildings on 9/11.
None of this irrational racist nonsense makes sense but it is a reality that has come to bite Muslims and people who 'appear' Muslim in the US (and just about everywhere).
Somewhere in 2002 I was about to sign papers for a car I was buying in Portland (Oregon) when the white salesman who had been nice throughout the negotiation paradoxically looked at me and said: "So is your father a terrorist?"
He thought it was funny. I did not.
So I got up immediately and walked away saying "f*ck you I'll take my business elsewhere."
It's almost surreal watching the empire and its contents collapse into insanity.
