Ferraro: "They're Attacking Me Because I'm White"

Geraldine Ferraro is convinced that sexism trumps racism. She also believes that her comments about Obama are deemed racist because she is white.

This is how she responded in part:

"Any time anybody does anything that in any way pulls this campaign down and says let's address reality and the problems we're facing in this world, you're accused of being racist, so you have to shut up ..."

Racism works in two different directions. I really think they're attacking me because I'm white. How's that?"

Interesting hey?

So Ferraro makes Obama's race the sole reason for his "success" yet this is not to be deemed racist. Has she been sleeping through the historical contentiousness of race and racism in America?

I don't think so.

What Ferraro said is as crass as it is calculated. She is motioning an urgent race warning to white supporters of Obama to reject him or risk losing to McCain.

And even as Clinton distances herself from this racist appeal, it serves her interests. The deed, as they say, is already done.

Ferraro's message to white men is that Obama's "success" is a kind of contrived affirmative action that has gone too far in terms of its liberal intent.

In this context, she wants to agitate white men to see that they are being discriminated against even as they may be supporting Obama.

She is also saying to Obama's white female supporters that they must remember that sexism always trumps racism.

In effect, Ferraro's comments is an "enough is enough" warning to those silly white liberals who think Obama is anything more than a Black man in America's treacherous race relations.

This then is the "fact" that she is asserting. What she won't acknowledge is that her "fact" is distorted by racism.

Still, she is brazen enough, or rather the Clinton campaign is desperate enough, to suggest that Obama is just an unqualified Black man.

Obama, on the other hand, can't call her a racist upper-class liberal because that would betray the trust of his white supporters. He needs white folk and colourpeans to believe that he can transcend race, particularly his race.

And this is what is wrong with Obama. He is an opportunistic apologist for the very racism that created, and sustains, him.

In fact, he is even now on record saying that he does not think that Ferraro's comments are racist.

He obviously needed to say this.

For Obama, the so-called issues cannot be about the systemic racism that defines America. It can never be.

This is the main reason behind his "success".

In order for Clinton to win the democratic nomination she will need the likes of Ferraro to remind white voters that Obama can't escape being Black.

What a liberal dilemma for the Clinton campaign hey?

***Update (March 13, 12:13am SA time)***

Interesting observations, Ridwan. I really like that line that Ferraro uses saying she is being attacked for being white. Uh-huh. So what are folks say: "Hey you white upper class whore to corporations...?" Or are they saying something like, "Saying a presidential candidates campaign solely rests on his race is racist." One of the many tools racist like to use is the "reverse racsim" card. Get called on your obvious racism, scream "REVERSE RACISM" for getting called on it.

Very interesting analysis, Brother, about her comments actually being PART of the genocidal Clinton Family Campaign.

Excellent analysis of the entire dust-up, Ridwan! You've nailed it. The Clinton campaign has figured out the most insidious method for injecting race into the campaign while keeping their hands "clean."

I'd like to hope that people will see through it, but after what happened in November 2004, I vowed to never again underestimate American stupidity.

Eugene and Dade thank you kindly for your comments.

I find it very interesting that Ferraro resigned by pledging her undying support for Clinton.

Clinton merely made gestures that both campaigns need to focus on issues.

Amazing, as if race is not the issue.

Whiteness so badly needs us to deny race and racism.

Yeah right!

Thanks again for commenting on this post.

Peace brothers,
Ridwan

One of the things that has been left out of the talk about this person and her racists comments is that she said the exact same thing about Jesse Jackson and his 1988 presidential campaign. Here's a person who's racism is so deeply ingrained that it is repetitive. One of the things I must ask is does she feel the same way about Hilary Clinton? Would Hilary not be able to run for congress if she were Black and/or a male?

Dude,

don't presume to know what she's thinking. period.

You want to know what I think?

Obama will win because the fucking mess they made cannot be cleaned up by Superman, and it will prove the incompetence of black men, (to those with money, wealth and power, mainly white men) when he can't clean it up.

Watch.

Geez Nunya maybe you should take your own advice!

At the very least my analysis of what Ferraro's comments mean here is not a projection.

Kashea thanks for reminding me about the Jackson incident.

A lot of folks who would pretend to know that her comments mean are so tied to their own race sensitivities that they could not see the forest for the trees.
